Geographical position

Trebinje is located at the southern end of the Republic of Srpska and BiH, in the hinterland of the Adriatic Sea and Dubrovnik - Herceg Novi Riviera. It is located on the border of the Federation of BiH , Croatia and Montenegro . The city is situated on the banks of Trebisnjica river, beneath the mountain Leotar, at an altitude of 273 m. Trebinje is only 27 km away from Dubrovnik and from Herceg Novi 45 km.

Climate

Mediterranean climate, with short and mild winters and long hot summers, is typical for Trebinje. The average annual temperature is 16.6 ° C, the average January temperature is 8.3 ° C, while the temperature in July is 26.5 ° C. In summers, temperatures rise above 38 ° C, and in winters it sometimes decreases below 0 ° C. In average, the annual rainfall is 1624 mm. With 260 sunny days a year, the City of Trebinje is one of the sunniest cities in the Balkans. The climate is suitable for growing citrus fruits and other fruits (figs, pomegranates, tangerines, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, olives, grapes).

History

Trebinje was first mentioned in the 10th century by Constantine Porphyrogenitus under the name Tribunia which later changed into Travunia. The present name dates back to the sixteenth century, and the oldest inhabitants of Trebinje were Illyrians, Thracians and Greeks. Through history, Trebinje has developed itself under influences of the Byzantine Empire and later the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today, numerous cultural legacies that bear witness to cultures that have shaped Trebinje today can be found in Trebinje and its surroundings.

Development resources

The cheapest energy, favorable climate conditions and great cultural tradition are only some of specifics related to Trebinje. Hydropower, solar and wind energy potentials are the most important development resources in Trebinje. Agriculture also takes an important place. Organic products, today a rare privilege, is grown both in the city and in the vicinity of Trebinje. Once an industrial center of the region, best known for Tool Factory Trebinje and Textile industry "Novotex",  now has a tendency to revive its industrial production. A high-quality skilled workforce and the proximity of border with the EU - countries Croatia and Montenegro, are just some of the advantages that Trebinje offers to potential investors.

Culture

There are numerous historical monuments, religious buildings and archaeological sites in the area of Trebinje. It is a place of birth and life of a famous poet Jovan Ducic, whose remains now lie in Monastery Gracanica on Crkvina hill above Trebinje. In addition to numerous cultural and historical monuments, the City of Trebinje also has a variety of natural beauties and specificities. Many hotels, motels and restaurants offer visitors a complete pleasure of their stay in this city.

Tourist pearl

Natural beauties and attractions of the city are numerous (springs, sinkholes, caves,  rare plant and animal species, attractive natural sites for recreation and tourism - Lastva, Zubci, Bijela Gora). Accommodation capacities such as hotels, motels , hostels, eco-camps, count around 650 beds in total. Various cultural and educational institutions operate in the city center. Tourism, along with agriculture, is recognized as one of strategic directions in development of Trebinje's huge potentials.

Sports camp

Each year, the Sports Basketball Camp "Dejan Bodiroga" gathers young basketball talents aged 12 to 18 from all over the world. For six seasons of its existence the camp has hosted more than 1800 participants from 25 countries around the world. According to opinions of many sports experts, the Sports Camp "Dejan Bodiroga" Trebinje has grown into the best and most organized sporting event of this kind in this part of Europe.
